Steffi C.N. Wong 王晉雅

Steffi completed JD (full-time) and PCLL in Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was awarded bronze prize in academic excellence in JD. Before studying law, she earned her degree in Bachelor in Social Sciences: European Studies (French) in the Hong Kong Baptist University, for which she was awarded Scholastic Award (being the first in her year) on graduation. 

Since her call to the Bar in 2015, Steffi has been developing a broad practice in civil and criminal matters. She has worked under the supervision of seasoned counsel on various criminal appeal cases in the Court of Appeal and therefore is keen to broaden her practice, in particular, to hone her skills in appellate advocacy. She has appeared as sole advocate and led junior in magistracy appeals.

Steffi regularly conducts trials in the Magistracies, for both the prosecution and the defence. As such, she has gained much experience in prosecuting as well as defending a wide-range of criminal offences, including dishonesty offences, fraud, criminal intimidation, sexual offences, immigration matters and serious traffic offences. She has experience in the District Court for civil work, applying for injunctive relief as well as various applications in matrimonial law and matters in guardianship of children. She has been junior counsel in international arbitration. She has provided written opinions on points of law such as criminal confiscation, bankruptcy and statutory interpretation. She often takes up pro bono work. She also works as a case reporter for Hong Kong Cases.

Notable cases:

  • HKSAR v Ng Yin Tat HCMA 47/2014: an appeal against conviction for obtaining by deception on the grounds that the learned magistrate should have given due weight and consideration for medical expert evidence in assessing dishonesty.
  • International arbitration: Led by Mr. Kay Chan and acting for a Chinese manufacturer, a successful defence against a breach of contract claim of about US$3.5 million brought by a South Korean buyer in an arbitration in the HKIAC.
